#wecandobetter, installation performance, takes the Australian government’s immigration policy of offshore processing and mandatory indefinite detention as a starting point.
It questions our empathy and acceptance of differences, and explores ways of opening up to others.
The installation consists of cardboard boxes, folded books printed with the “Nauru Files” on one side, and the “Senate Enquiry Report” on the other. A looped video projection gives a short historical background. One social worker who was on Manus Island, one advocate and two refugees living in Brisbane tell personal stories through small speakers disseminated throughout the space. First, the performer reads silently, then unfolds all the books one by one, then asks the audience to think about responses to personal questions. The installation evolves throughout the performance. The audience participate by holding the books, reading them, listening to stories and reflecting on their thoughts.

#wecandobetter was made whilst Suzon was in residence at Villa Waldberta, City of Munich (July-September 2017), and performed with a group of artists in Argentina at the
Magdalena Segunda Generación Festival (Oct 2017).
